San Diego weddings are what I built my business around. Over the past eight years I've photographed intimate elopements at Sunset Cliffs, black-tie ballroom receptions at the US Grant, garden ceremonies at the San Diego Botanic Garden, and everything in between. My wedding coverage starts the morning of your day — getting-ready details, flat-lays of the invitation suite, the quiet moments before the first look — and stays with you through the last dance. I shoot with two mirrorless bodies at all times, dual card slots recording every frame to two cards for redundancy, and a second-shooter option for larger guest counts. I coordinate quietly with your planner, DJ, and officiant so the day flows the way you envisioned it, and I deliver a full curated gallery of 500–800+ edited images within four to six weeks.

Meet your photographer
Hi, I'm Mikayla.
I'm a San Diego–based wedding and portrait photographer chasing the last thirty minutes of golden light along the coast. My style is documentary at heart — real laughter, unposed glances, the way your kids actually look at each other — softened with a warm, film-inspired edit.
Over 8 years and 400+ sessions, I've shot Coronado beach weddings, La Jolla Cove engagements, Poway backyard maternity sessions, and every celebration in between. If you're planning a session in San Diego County, I'd love to hear from you.
I built Salt & Light around one idea: the best photos happen when nobody is trying too hard. I direct gently, keep the pace unhurried, and pay attention to the tiny in-between moments — the look a bride gives her dad, the way a toddler tucks into her mom's neck. Those are the ones you'll hang on the wall.

ExploreEngagement sessions are where I get to know you before your wedding day, and they double as some of the most-shared images in your gallery. We'll pick a location that means something to you — the beach where you got engaged, the neighborhood you walk on Saturday mornings, the downtown block you had your first date on — and shoot in the last ninety minutes of daylight when San Diego light is at its softest. I direct gently the whole time so you never wonder what to do with your hands, and I catch the in-between laughter that becomes the frame you print big. Most sessions include one outfit change, a sunset walk, and optional ring detail shots. Galleries deliver in two to three weeks and pair beautifully with save-the-dates and wedding-website hero images.
Family sessions with me feel like an unhurried hour at your favorite park or beach — because that's what they are. I don't line kids up and count to three. I follow the energy: chasing your toddler across the sand, catching your teenager mid-eye-roll at a sibling, coaxing a genuine laugh out of your dad. My prompts are conversational and gentle, and I bring a few in-my-back-pocket tricks for keeping little ones engaged when their patience runs thin. Sessions run sixty to ninety minutes depending on ages, and I recommend booking within an hour of sunset for the warmest, most flattering light. In-home lifestyle sessions are also available for newborns, first birthdays, and rainy-day rescheduling. Galleries deliver in two to three weeks with 50–100+ finished images.
Maternity is a brief chapter and I love documenting it well. My favorite window is 30–36 weeks — you're glowing, comfortably rounded, and still mobile enough to enjoy the shoot. We'll usually meet at golden hour on a quiet stretch of beach, in a garden, or in your home if you'd rather be somewhere private. I bring flowy fabric options and simple styling tips, and I direct you through poses that flatter every body shape. Partners and older siblings are welcome, and I always shoot a mix of solo bump portraits and family images so you have both to print. Many of my maternity clients rebook me for newborn or first-birthday sessions once baby arrives; when we book both up front I bundle at a discount.
Graduation portraits are more than a cap-and-gown snapshot — they're the mile-marker photo you'll send to grandparents, print for the announcement, and hang in the hallway next to your kindergarten picture. I shoot college and high-school grads on campus (SDSU, UCSD, USD, Point Loma Nazarene, San Diego City College, and every local high school), at a favorite San Diego location, or a mix of both. Sessions run 45–60 minutes and include cap-and-gown portraits, diploma detail shots, casual outfit changes, and optional family or friend-group photos. I edit for warm, natural color that reads well on print and Instagram alike, and galleries deliver within two weeks so announcements can go out on time.
Birthdays, quinceañeras, anniversaries, corporate mixers, baby showers, retirement parties, milestone reunions — I cover the celebrations that don't fit the standard 'wedding or portrait' box. My approach for events is documentary: I move quietly through the room, catch the toasts and the tears, photograph the details you spent months planning (florals, cake, place cards, signage), and deliver a gallery that tells the story of your night from arrival to last dance. Coverage runs two to four hours for most private events; longer for full-day celebrations. I bring backup gear and off-camera lighting for indoor and after-dark receptions, and I coordinate with your planner or venue in advance so I know the timeline and never miss a moment.

Regional light & locations
How I shoot San Diego, region by region.
San Diego County is bigger and more varied than most out-of-town clients realize. Here's how I approach each region — the light, the vibe, and the locations I return to over and over.
The Coast
La Jolla, Coronado, Pacific Beach, Del Mar, Encinitas, Oceanside, Imperial Beach. The coast is my home base — I know which cliffs light up at sunset, which beaches allow tripods, which tide pools clear at low tide, and where to park without a two-block walk. Coastal sessions are my most-booked because of the light: the last thirty minutes before sunset paint everything in warm gold and pink pastels that don't need heavy editing to look magazine-ready.
Downtown & Central
Downtown, Little Italy, Balboa Park, Hillcrest, North Park, South Park, Old Town. Central San Diego is where architecture and green space collide — the historic Spanish colonial of Balboa Park, the brick alleys of the Gaslamp, the color-drenched murals of Barrio Logan. I love central sessions for engagements and grad portraits when a client wants texture, personality, and a break from beach-scape uniformity.
North County
Escondido, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Santa Fe, Vista, San Marcos, Carlsbad. North County is where I shoot most of my families — quiet parks, rolling hillsides, backyard sessions, and vineyard portraits when we can time it around harvest. It's also where several of my favorite wedding venues live, including estate properties and coastal chapels within a fifteen-minute drive of the freeway.
East County
El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, Alpine, Julian. East County gives you golden fields, oak groves, mountain backdrops, and (in fall) the only real autumn color in the county up in Julian. It's an easy pick for families wanting a rustic, seasonal vibe without leaving the county, and it's my go-to for engagement sessions when a couple wants something outside the beach cliché.
South County
Chula Vista, National City, Bonita, Imperial Beach. South County is underappreciated — quiet beaches, empty parks, and a shorter drive for families in the southern half of the county. I shoot South County sessions year-round and I especially love the sunsets from Imperial Beach pier and the eucalyptus groves in Bonita.

You receive a fully edited online gallery. Portrait sessions deliver 50–100+ images, weddings deliver 500–800+ depending on hours of coverage.
What's your turnaround time?
I deliver portrait galleries in 2–3 weeks and wedding galleries in 4–6 weeks, with a sneak-peek gallery within 72 hours of every session.

What's included in a wedding collection?
Every wedding collection includes me as your lead photographer, full-day coverage of your chosen hours, a private online gallery, personal print release, and a pre-wedding consultation.
Do you offer prints and albums?
Yes — heirloom albums, fine-art prints, canvas wraps, and framed pieces are available through your online gallery after delivery.
How do payments and deposits work?
A 25% retainer secures your date. The balance is due 30 days before your session or wedding. I accept card, ACH, and check.

Yes — I carry full professional liability and equipment insurance and I'll happily send a certificate of insurance to your venue on request.
What if it rains or the weather turns bad?
San Diego is sunny 300+ days a year, but if the forecast turns I reschedule to the next available date at no charge. For weddings I plan covered backup locations at the venue during our consult.
